La Mére

La Mére began as a self portrait: the masculine pursuit of fly fishing captured in the fish’s curvature as though being lifted mid-fight from a stream…by a woman. But then I began to see the two objects melding into one—from behind, one sees the flourish of a shoe’s ruffle just beyond the wearer’s feminine ankle. Walking around the sculpture, the viewer discovers that the ruffle is but the tail of a fish, the foot its body. Thus emerged the concept of Flash Sideways Studio, in which an object appears as one thing, but on closer inspection or consideration is truly another.
