soapstone, satin spar
7.5″ x 5″ x 7″
Santander is named for a wonderful seaside town in northern Spain where my son spent a summer in the welcoming embrace of a delightful, kind family. This piece is a tribute to their graciousness, allowing someone so different to be enfolded into their daily lives; thus, the softness of the soapstone wrapped around the white satin spar, so different in color and texture, but at the core, just another rock. In this work, I chose to use both representational and abstract styles to further offset the varying materials and to appeal to both tastes.
